Hank Page

retitle? This title means nothing. Change to another name that means something. "Jimmie Davis" is the name of the man who wrote You Are My Sunshine.

Echo-y You Are My Sunshine at the beginning?

"I can't believe" - instead "You'll never know"

Original story;

  1. The singer dreams about someone, talking with them at school and having fun (dreaming of the beginning of the relationship when everything was good and pure).
  2. The singer then wakes up to see that person, who apologizes for an argument. The singer accepts the apology but regrets they were not the one to apologize first (There are troubles in the relationship, but both parties are trying to make it work).
  3. Sometime later, the singer notes that both he and the other person are happy. He thinks back on the relationship with the person, recognizing there were good times and bad times. The singer wonders if it was because of the bad times the person is no longer there. However, after knowing all that happened, the singer decided he would do it all over again. (They split, deciding the relationship is not working, but it is amicable and both retain their respect for one another and love for the time they shared.)

The song gets heavier and louder. After the last verse and chorus, the song strips itself away measure by measure, each time a layer of the song stops, until just the undistorted guitar remains.

Ultimately the song itself it structured as if it were the relationship. Slow and peaceful for the first two verse choruses, but the distortion hits as the relationship gets rockier and more abrasive. As the song closes, it softens and gets quieter, easing the tension and restoring peace.

Whenever I think about this song, I imagine a teacher writing on a chalkboard.

Lyrics

It was wonderful
I dreamed about you
We met in the gym
In the push and shove
We were talking
On the bleachers
Got to walking
Mocking teachers

I can't believe

Never noticed
When I now woke up
You were standing there
To apologize
For the fight we had
Last time you were here
Apology accepted
It should have been me

So happy
All those times
Always happy
Through better times
We had bad times
Is that why you're gone
We had bad times
Do it over again
